Ski tourers appreciate the importance of a flexible boot shaft to help them get up hills quickly and easily. At the same time, the outer shell must be rigid enough to ensure stability and precise power transmission to the ski. The newest version of this boot boasts all of these features, each one optimised with input from professional users. The shaft can now rotate 80 degrees during an ascent, while the shell is made from a particularly rigid and durable type of polyamide. Compared to the previous model, the boot is lighter and slimmer, and has new features, such as a twist lock that makes it easier to put on. Designed for extreme situations, the Travers boot incorporates the manufacturer's corporate design and visually communicates its enhanced capabilities.

JURY STATEMENT
The boot impresses with its contemporary aesthetics, well-executed functional details and smooth integration of parts. It is also extremely light and features the brand's signature graphics as well as a fastening system widely favoured by cycling enthusiasts.

"The project was extremely interdisciplinary
that's what made it so appealing."

A ski boot needs to be more than functional; it must also be visually appealing and effectively convey the brand's identity. Is it difficult to achieve this balance?

JULIAN PRÖLL: As industrial designers, functionality is always our starting point – especially for a touring boot that has to withstand extreme conditions. At the same time, it was important to strengthen the brand identity by building on the design of the previous boot and giving it a fresh interpretation. We approached the design from the inside out, ensuring that every visible element serves a clear function, from the BOA® H4 lacing system to the ergonomic shell shape. The design communicates its functionality, while the precise lines and high-quality materials create an authentic appearance that remains true to the brand.

Maximum mobility for the ascent and maximum stiffness for the descent are inherently conflicting requirements. How can this conflict be resolved?

JULIAN PRÖLL: This is one of the key challenges in designing touring boots. In the new Travers, we solved it with an entirely new construction: the light weight of just 1,060 grams and the extreme shaft rotation ensure maximum efficiency during the ascent. At the same time, strategically placed design elements and materials, together with a precise closure system, provide high rigidity for the descent. The key lies in striking a successful balance, with flexibility where it is needed and stiffness where it enhances performance. The successful combination of intelligent mechanisms, material expertise and design makes all the difference.

Which detail are you particularly proud of?

JULIAN PRÖLL: It has to be the finely tuned interplay between the shape of the shell, the BOA® system and the Vibram® sole. These three components function as an integrated system to provide optimum support and intuitive handling even in challenging conditions. This highlights how good design can enhance both performance and aesthetics.

How interdisciplinary is your development process?

JULIAN PRÖLL: Extremely interdisciplinary – that's what makes it so appealing. Experts in shoe development, materials science, ergonomics, prototyping, athlete support and, of course, design were closely involved in the Travers project from the outset. The feedback from Fischer's touring and freeride team, who regularly tested prototypes in high alpine conditions, was particularly valuable. We incorporated their insights directly into the development process. As a designer, you don't just create – you also bridge disciplines, moderate requirements and provide the vision for implementation.
