The peaceful demonstrations and events of autumn 1989 that eventually led to the reunification of Germany are firmly anchored in the country’s collective memory. Today, 30 years later, the installation on the forecourt of St George’s church in Waren, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, is a reminder of the values that the demonstrators took to the streets for: democracy, freedom of speech, peace. Long poles support metal banners with the slogans of those days lasered out of them so that they can be read against the sky. In addition, an AR app provides access to documentary film footage and photos of those who were there.

Jury
It’s remarkable that this installation is based solely on text and yet is so very impressive. The idea has been translated into a very crisp design that is anything but loud and conjures a pleasantly airy feel.
