Industrial sites in this part of the world are facing major changes – new technologies and the relocation of production call for different building concepts. In most cases, that means demolition and new construction. The Urbanharbor in Ludwigsburg, on the other hand, is based on reconditioning former production facilities and turning them into versatile buildings that provide space for agile working and creative workflows in an innovation-friendly campus atmosphere.

Taking the building-within-a-building principle as a starting point, old industrial halls, the former purpose of which is still palpable, were successively equipped with new, modular working structures and made fit for the future. The latest transformation, a 10,000-square-metre hall called the Hybrid Loop, stands out for its integrated energy system which, thanks to photovoltaics, a heat pump, interconnectedness and linkage with the local grid, permits climate-positive operation.

JURY
A visionary example of a new interpretation of work in urban environments. The holistic concept is designed for the long term and integrates state-of-the-art technical options for the climate-neutral and sustainable use of real estate that also has direct links with the local community.
