Human hubris seems to know no bounds and is increasingly transforming the Earth – unfortunately, not for the better. Climate change is just one example of the manmade catastrophes that will have far-reaching consequences not just for future generations but for the planet’s flora and fauna as well. In 2021, the State of Baden-Württemberg’s special exhibition at Stuttgart Museum of Natural History was dedicated to the Anthropocene, i.e. to the geological epoch defined by human impact. The show presents the many levels on which these effects are taking place together with their causes and invites visitors to reflect on and reconsider the way they think, while nevertheless aiming to provide positive impetus for change.

In keeping with the logic of the issue it explores, the concept takes a circular approach and is based on the reuse of the exhibition elements, ecological materials and pared-down forms.

JURY
The exhibition design centres on a backbone of scaffolding – in deliberate contrast to the historic interior of the museum. This simplicity is just as compatible with the issue at stake as the absence of composite materials and the didactic approach, which includes positive perspectives as well.
